I wonder if my atlas has Idaho somewhere in there. Is that in Mexico or Canada?

What is the BestPass program? I got my transponder through Oregon Green Light. It is the same as the Norpass transponder but Oregon gives them to you for free and Norpass charges ($45 I believe). I then phoned Norpass gave them some information and they activated the transponder for Norpass. My next call was to Prepass, gave them some info and they activated my transponder for Prepass and deactivated my Prepass transponder. My one transponder works on all systems, no charge but a record on OGL and Norpass and a charge but no record (so they tell me) on Prepass. As a side note Prepass used to be headquartered in Az and Utah was with Norpass. Prepass moved their headquarters to Utah and Utah switched from Norpass to Prepass ( a little collusion perhaps ). My transponder worked equally well on both systems.

You only get the transponder for free from Oregon if you use their technology at least once a month on average. I called them about it and they will actually look up your truck by your license plate and see how many times you have passed through Oregon in at least the past 12 months.

It was actually a little scary to find out they keep a record on you whether or not you have a transponder. Apparently, they take pictures of your license plate as you go through. This is something to keep in mind when going through those northwest states. They can, if they want, look up the time posted at weigh station A and see the time you're going through at weigh station B and give you a speeding ticket if they show you were going too fast or possibly get you for falsifying your logbook if the times don't match on a logbook check. Now, I don't know if they do this on a regular basis or not, but the potential is there.

Since I did not qualify for the free transponder through Oregon, I next called Norpass in Washington. They have the Norpass transponder for the cheapest price, $30.00. Kentucky charges $45.00.

As far BestPass, that is the fusion transponder that is capable of electronic tolling as well as weigh station preclearance with both Norpass and Prepass. You can also choose to just enroll in one or two of the programs if you don't want all three. Basically, you can get EZ-Pass, Norpass, and Prepass all on one transponder. They charge $25.00 for the transponder and you have to prepay $125.00 for the EZ-Pass tolls to get started. Their website is http://www.bestpass.org/home/ You can get additional toll savings on the Ohio Turnpike as well as on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, New York State Thruway and Maryland Toll Bridges, if you have enough volume.

Glad I don't have to mess with tolls! Of course though, I run local construction with a side-dump in the summer, and a flat bed between SLC and Vegas in the winter. No tolls at all!
