I've got a load that I have to relay in Sacramento but will need to go over Donner Pass tomorrow morning, during a snow storm. I'm gonna try to change the relay to Sparks NV, where I live, and may possibly end up in the same boat as you.
Whos is staying out for Christmas?

Wouldn't you rather be home with your family even just one day?bet they would love you spending this joyous holiday with them.
-
Don't work for the pumpkin, but I'll be running over the holidays

Unless you've got a load you can pick up today or tomorrow morning and run it across the country to deliver Monday, there really isn't much point to working over the holiday. NOBODY is going to be around to load you or unload you. Brokers take time off, too. The last time I delivered on Thanksgiving, it was a load of pipe to an oil field in Wyoming...then they were going to sit me 4 days until they could get ahold of someone to find a load out. Storm rolling in and I didn't have chains, so they BOUNCED me all of the way back to Minnesota for a load down to Texas. Yup. Haven't been out over a holiday since.
When I was a local driver, and before I had a family of my own (back when it was just me & the dog...and the dog rode with me), I'd volunteer to work the holidays to give folks with families the opportunity to stay home. There was never much local work, though, so I typically stay home. With local work, when the places you go to load and unload are closed for the holidays, you get the holidays off.
Merry Christmas, whether you're home or in your home-away-from-home.hunted Thanks this. -
I used to work on the holidays too, which usually meant dropping off a load at one rail yard, and picking up another for the next week delivery. (rail yards never close) I know it's hard to grasp ( dealt with it my whole life) but some people, like me, don't celebrate Christmas.
I know, still, I hope everyone that does, has a happy and safe holiday. And those that are going coast to coast so we can have our strawberries, ( or whatever) thank you.
mickimause Thanks this. -
I'm out for christmas. We get a bonus for staying out at least 30 days and had I gone home it would've only been at 2 weeks.
-
don't forget to call your loved ones and wish them a merry Christmas.hope u find a place serving a nice Christmas meal.

Christmas is the only holiday I would refuse to be on the road during. I'm single and not religious, but I do have parents who are aging and a niece and nephew I adore. Christmas morning at my sisters house is very special and no load is worth missing it.
A_C_Cooper, mickimause, rickybobby and 2 others Thank this. -
I'm home daily now, but am on call 24/7/365. I try to be the dispatcher I'd want to run for.
I have one driver who specifically requested to work on Friday, another doing a short run then home, and the other 12 are home.
Whether you're home or out, have a safe and enjoyable holiday season!gentleroger, TennMan, rickybobby and 1 other person Thank this.
