Recently bought an 07 379. The exhaust is in good shape but I don't like it. It has the big vertical mufflers on each side right behind the doors and then the stacks barely extend up past the top of the cab and are pretty small in diameter.

I don't want to go to anything to crazy but would like straight stacks with a muffler under the truck.

Do I need a complete kit or can I just buy two stacks bolt them on and get a muffler shop to put a muffler underneath?

If your going with just one muffler,I'd get a straight thru Donaldson. You can search the forum,it's a m100463 or something like that.
You'll need to fab up some hangers to support it.
For the stacks,I'd go as large a diameter as you can afford. It'll keep the noise down a little.

I agree with 062. If noise will be a concern for you, the longer the pipes the less noise there will be also, but then it gets more expensive. I probably would not reuse your current mufflers cause they most likely have a baffle in them which are very restrictive. The donaldson m100463 is a great muffler which flows good. They are around 95 bucks at ryder fleet products.

Noise isn't a concern for me. The louder the better I like the sound but I want it to be legal. I can't have anything too tall because my shop only has a 12' tall door and I like to put the truck inside to work on it at times.

I just got this kit from 32 chrome. Its there peterbilt economy kit came with everything needed minus the T pipe for under the truck I bought that else where. Its the 8" kit with pickett elbows that reduce to from 8"to5" under the cab. I ran the truck for a week straight piped but the jakes were crazy loud, so i went to my local muffler shop and got a magnaflow 5" in/out high flow truck diesel muffler thats around 24" long and mounted it under the truck to help quiet things down a touch. Its still loud but now its not obnoxious when the detroit hits the jakes.
