I can't comment on the Rand as I have never used one but my personal experience with Garmin has been positive. In doing my research before buying I saw a lot of posts about the Rands locking up which steered me towards Garmin. I am sure like anything for every forum post you see about someone complaining about a product there are 100 people that are using it with no problems. I am sure Garmin has some issues as well but I have not had any.

The way I see it Garmin is an expert at making GPS units. That is what they do and have been for a long time. Not just road GPS's but marine, hiking, etc. They probably have that part down but may not have the best information on the roads like Rand does as they are primarily a map company. Rand's trucker atlas is basically the road bible but I don't think their expertise at building electronic devices is on par with Garmin's.

I understand but how many Garmin 2016 Atlases do you see at Pilot. Oops. Eagle eye hindsight.

I figured the most situational awareness you can have is the best. I have a friend who puts a 5.8ghz Wireless magnetic camera on the blind side of his trailer to help him back. He has a small monitor he look at if needed. Never hurts to have an extra set of eyes.

Yup. Rolled my truck almost 3 weeks ago. Still unemployed and looking at other industries as well. Sigh.

I agree 100% that Rand likely has better map data but Garmin is likely better at building the electronic devices. Ever since I was a kid Rand has made paper maps. No doubt they are experts at that but they are new in the world of making electronics. Again I am not bashing Rand I have never used one it just seems from reading the forums they have a lot of electronic glitches probably from them being new in the electronics arena.

Nothing against TruckerPatrick but if you owned a business would you hire someone who rolled a truck three weeks ago and put them in your 200k truck with your name on the line if they crash?

I have used the RM units since the 500.
They did lock up now and then.
A simple reboot would solve the problem, until the next time.

    But not any more.
And I have really tried to get it to. It seems they had fixed that problem long ago.
My last update was about 9 months ago after the new maps came out. I haven't been able to get a glitch since.
Like I said, I've really tried. But they fixed the memory overload problem.

I got off Windows and onto Linux, so I can't update it now.
And I really wish they would fix that. How hard could it be for them to port the program for Linux?

Submit enough apps and someone will hire you.

You should be able to find a windows emulator for linux that could run the update program.
