I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have to constantly have my hand on the shifter to keep it from bouncing out of gear. Off road and a 2013+ paccar w/eaton. I don't know what they changed, but it will break a finger if you reach for the shifter on a bumpy gravel road.

A lot of vets might harp on this but automatic transmission are just more reliable these days. The Detroit 12 will take anything a new driver has to throw at it. Sure if you are buying a brand new truck you might prefer a manual but if you are the 2nd or more person in a truck lean towards an auto. I haven't spent anytime in the shop yet for transmission related things and I'm over 150k.

Manual transmissions are fine by me. My clutch failing and spending 5 hours carefully not stopping through LA County traffic tonight was very interesting though......
chris887 Thanks this. -
If that ever happens and you do need to stop, just slow down, get it into 1st and shut the truck off with it in gear when you need to stop. Then start it in 1st and the starter will not only turn the engine over, it will also get the truck rolling. Then go through the gears as normal (rinse and repeat).chris887 and GiantBeard Thank this.

Thanks! I was afraid that if I had to stop that I'd never move until I got it fixed. Glad my driving instructor taught me how to use a clutch and how to float.

Yep. That also works if you run out of fuel waiting in line for a pump like an idiot. You can creep a real short distance like that if you have to. Don't ask me how I know about that scenario!GiantBeard Thanks this.

Personally I prefer the automatic in most situations. The only time I hate it is when in reverse. The auto is very "touchy" and hard to get the truck to move and requires a very soft touch or the truck wants to "buck" if you hit the gas a little too hard. Wonder if others have same issue or it is just me.?

Ultrashift?

My 10 speed eaton is similar.
