Fuel lubricity additives

Once a month,I'll dump a bottle of diesel kleen,then the next tank will be 2 stroke. I've tried back to back oil,can't tell any difference versus doing the once a month.

This is the list of the top performers in the study, 2 stoke was 7th, schaeffers was 6th.

 

Look at the top of this chart at what is ideal by the engine manufacturers, then look at the number for the baseline fuel, there is quite a bit of difference and goes to show the lubricity is not in the fuel that is needed.

Yes, if you have bio available then by all means run it, B20 would be ideal since it has less BTU than standard fuel, and without the ability to compensate the loss in energy you will drop HP on 100%.

I myself have not seen hardly any places here in Ohio or Michigan that sell it, could be because it is useless in cold weather unless you run a low percentage blend.

 

From what i see on the list sheaffers is the most complete and close to the top.

 

For strictly lubricity improvement, bio beats anything off the shelf hands down. And since just about every place is selling diesel laced with bio anyways, no need to add anything for lubricity. A simple 2% bio blend will bring lubricity up to Pre-LSD levels.

That being said, I use the Schaeffer stuff for multiple reasons (137ND in summer, 137ULSW in winter). At their recommended dosage rate, costs me about 1-2 cents per gallon of diesel, so very cost effective. So effectively, it is costing me, maybe, 1/4 cent a mile to use. But it has additional lubricity as well as all the other injector cleaner, anti-gel, anti-icing, and other nice features. Oh, it was mentioned that adding oily stuff to fuel can affect an Espar or Webasto heater. True. But the Schaeffer is a great product to keep those units running at peak. My Webasto is on its 4th winter. Not any maintenance done to it. Runs great and burns me out unless the temps are really down in the basement. But then, maybe it is because I also cycle it for about 1/2 hr every few weeks during the summer months as recommended by the maker.

Biodiesel at 100% does have lower BTU than ULSD #2 diesel (128 BTU). But not many folks running 100% biodiesel (119 BTU). At typical 5%, the BTU reduction is nominal at most. Many folks confuse BTU content reduction of ethanol with biodiesel. Totally different fuels. But biodiesel does elevate cetane levels. ULSD coming from the refinery is only required to have 40 cetane rating. Biodiesel elevates that. 100% bio has a cetane rating of around 65. A simple 5% blend elevates the cetane rating of diesel by several points.
