I'm new to trucking as a career change, and about to start my first job. I've been trying to research CB's and have several questions.
What features do I really need? What features do you find the most useful? I could care less for echo, I find it totally annoying. Not sure about roger beep. Should I spend my $$$ on other features?
What about weather bands? Are they really useful?
40 or ssb?
I've been looking at the Galaxy 979, the cobra 148 and the cobra 29 bluetooth. Any comments?
Thanks,

Cobra 29 should be sufficient. I bought a Cobra 148 for the ssb, but hardly ever hear anyone using it. On the few chances that I did hear someone talking, they never responded to me. You might want to get the version with weather channels if your truck's radio doesn't have them.

As Enigma said. Go with the 29.
While you're not sure about the roger beep. I can safely tell you, 70% of other drivers are sure they think it is more annoying than echo. A good tune, a good set of antennas, and a clear mic are all thats needed. The stock mic will be just fine to start.
Enigma...working sidebands take time. Just because you can hear someone, doesn't mean they can hear you.
They could have been 500 miles away.

Oh! Well that explains a lot. lol thanks for the info.

Forget the garbage, get the weatherbands. I use mine all the time. Can't beat it for running the mountains in the winter and finding out there is a front coming in and you better get over that hill tonight or chain-up in the morning.

Hey, thx for the input! I have pretty much decided against ssb and the cobra w/bluetooth. Now I'm looking at the cobra 29 WX NW ST, the galaxy dx939 (someone somewhere said this is a ham not a cb???) and the uniden PC78 elite.
Any pros/cons on any of these?
Thanks again for the feedback! -
just a point of clarity.
galaxy DX models, 939 949 and 959 are all legal CB radios -
I have a galaxie 959 the digital readout one and it works very well. I am staying away from any new cobras being that I had gone thru 3 in a year and they all did the same things when they quit.

Like most have said stay away from the roger beep for sure and the echo and reverb. A good 29 or 25 cobra are excellent radios and will last for ever if taken care of and not butchered up. A good peak and tune as they call it are good but make sure they don't go to cutting stuff out and telling you thius will help your modulation and all that bull. If you can find a good tech that has invested his money properly and has a station monitor he can align the receive and transmit and get them dead on for you and it will be the best money you can spend on a good radio. Most of the mass produced radios like CB are tuned at the factory to a tolerance of of +- so much so they are not dead on freq on transmit or receive and they are not aligned to 100% efficient since the techs in the factory do 100 a day they don't have time to be picky they get them close and leave it at that and they sound fine to most people but once you have one aligned on a scope and get it dead on you will hear the difference in transmit and receive.

Whatever you do, please forego all the nonsense features (echo, roger beep, reverb, talkback, singing, whistling, etc). It's really annoying for the folks on the receiving side and does nothing for your performance. Get yourself a properly tuned Cobra or Uniden and you'll be set. I currently have one of Sparky's Cobra 29-LTD Black Chrome HP EDITION and put on a D104-M6B power microphone. The radio talks/listens very well.
