Make sure you check the weather. I made this mistake last week and ended up in a whiteout on highway 11 while highway 17 was getting rain (and not freezing rain.) If its not slick then the hills on 17 while bobtailing shouldn't be a big issue and that route is shorter but nothing major. If it was summer I'd tell you to take 17 if light or bobtailing.
The route between nipigon and thunderbay was horrible. Ice buildup making the road just horrible bumps but hopefully they have that cleared up by now.tinytim Thanks this. -
Exactly.
Hwy 11 is the shorter route from North Bay. If you coming out of the GTA 17 is shorter.

Personally I will avoid 11 whenever possible. Many disagree with me but with the lack of passing lanes I see too many insane passing moves on that road. I know more than one driver who has had a near head on due to 63 mph truck passing 62 mph truck. -
Ah right. Forgot I always come from the GTA so thats what my math is based off of.

Thanks for all the response guys. Looks like about a 48 / 52 split...lol. Sure wish I wasn't bobtailing...and looking at forecast there seems to be some snow Starting very soon.
Are there any Mandatory Chain Up areas on either route if roads are poor? I doubt the airline would appreciate me throwing in a set of chains in my carry on bag. -
Buy a set of the new super duper cloth traction covers that you can buy now. They will fit in your suitcase.
-
Go to Regina then north to Saskatoon then west to Edmonton. If your bobtailing parking will not an issue for you. Safe trip driver.

Just a heads up, North Bay has a winter storm watch in effect right now. Heavy and blowing snow Monday night and Tuesday. Supposed to be near zero visibility and 20 to 30 cms by Tuesday night. Hopefully you'll already be through here by then.
White Line Fever Thanks this. -
It's 48 kms. (25 miles) shorter from North Bay to Nipigon via Highway 11.
-
Plans are to leave Montreal Tuesday morning which would put me on the same track as the storm I'm guessing. Hmmmm, maybe there'll be a Tire Shop in Ontario or Quebec that gets to sell me 8 new drives...LOL
The PST sux but might be worth it.
