This year I have grossed about 48k.

But - 'good driver' is measured in different ways.

I am a 'good driver' in that I always try to be safe and on time.
But, I am really a bad driver in terms of getting the most miles that I can possibly drive.

I'm also bad when it comes to weather.
I will shut down if I don't like the conditions. And I really don't care for how long.
I am a chicken when it comes to snow and ice, and wind if I am light.

My bottom line has nothing to do with 'getting the miles'.
It has to do with getting there safely and with the least amount of risk.
And, I might add, getting enough rest time.
A 10 hour break is very rare for me because I need more time than that. I plan my trips with at least a 12 hour break, and plenty in between.

I don't make as much as many drivers, simply because I like to take it easy.
But I make enough for what I need, and that is what matters to me.

I get where you are coming from. I made 51k as a local driver. I could make more elseware, but I have a good schedule, and only work 45 to 50 hours a week. But I'm in chicago and can not shut down for bad weather, we run no matter what. It gets really interesting sometimes.

That 3k extra, in my opinion, is not worth the extra risk.
Even another 10k would not be.

    But that's just me.

I do it to get home every night. In bad weather I stay off expressways. On the surface streets there is more risk of getting stuck or a minor accidents, but the risk of something really bad happening is lower.

With me, I do OTR to see my girls more often.
Every other month instead of every summer.
And this way I can bring one of them on my truck every summer as well.

True, and I know employers who will not hire parents that are so behind on child support that their license ends up being suspended, call it a catch 22, but personally? I agree with it

Being single doesn't mean you don't need to provide for your kids, and yes! Single men and women have kids too

    go with the 2nd post.

Getcha a non trucking job pay the bill and get your license back.

    Then switch to trucking.

Super easy to get a job compared to say 6 years ago.

McDonalds will hire you in an instant.

Hell some offer bonuses and pay $12 an hour. Same as some trucking jobs lol.

    MidwestResident Thanks this.
