Here I sit at a Love's somewhere in Indiana and I am reminded of a significant event in my past life as a professional pilot.

I was flying for Piedmont Airlines a million years ago. There were many similarities between that and driving a truck; airline schedules had a departure time and place and an arrival place. The crew's job was to make on-time departures and go to the right place. I did that successfully for a long time.

One day, after landing, taxiing to the gate, letting all the passengers off, closing the flight paperwork, getting into the hotel van for the ride to the hotel, getting the key to my room, and opening the door, I had a spectacular and very scary thought:

I had no idea where I was. I couldn't even have told anyone what state I was in.

I was in the right place, but I had to open a drawer and look at the phone book to learn I was in Shenandoah, Virginia. It was then I began to change my own career plans; I figured if I could go somewhere and get there and have it be the right place but really not know where I was without checking a hotel phone book, it was time to consider options.

So once again, here I sit at a Love's somewhere in Indiana. Only there's no hotel phone book.

At least you were a regional domestic pilot. Imagine flying trans-oceanic routes and being 6,000 miles from home and 9 time zones away.

I used to wake up like that. Only it was because I was really drug or under the influence of some kind of mind altering substance. I never woke up across the country, but I did wake up next to a few women that thanks to booze, looked like a good idea at the time.

    popcorn169 and Nitemare13 Thank this.

That is something I never wanted to do; I did enough of it as a passenger growing up in the Middle East. Early in my career, I was living in Sandy Eggo and working out of Baltimore. The cross-country commute on Braniff and Eastern was enough long-distance, multiple time zones travel for me.

I'm at the WEL terminal in Joliet...at least that's what they call it. Tow's GPS says its Shorewood, IL. But no matter. I'm here until my 3-stopper to the Detroit area is loaded onto the trailer I'm picking up tomorrow..

Guess I'll find out if Domino's delivers...
