Yours must be wired that way, I can turn mine on with the truck running. The other day my display screen went blank, had no idea what temperature it was set at. The screen came back to life the next day. I also notice if you turn it off and then back on its always starts back at the default temp setting, just in case you lose your screen.

i have been told that they only work good for about a year, then you have to open the unit up and clean the screen that's inside the housing. I don't know the details of this problem but I hear it a lot from other drivers.

It cleans it out. When it runs at low output it will carbon up. The screen should be replaced once a year. You will need a 12mm socket with the side cut out like a oxygen sensor socket. Also they recommend cleaning the glow plug tip. You have to pull the glow plug to get to the screen.

The screen get fill with soot every years or years 1/2, you either clean it or change it.
I change instead of cleaning it.

Mine ran fine with NO maintenance for almost 8 years; dont know how much it was used the first 3 years as i didnt own the truck. I ran it on max for a few hours every once in a while when i was at home. The screen finally clogged and it stopped working reliably so i figured I got way more than my moneys worth .. Spent 400$ and had it completely rebuilt. YMMV
