I'm thinking my Tx delivery will be first thing AM. Not sure if I can run it all the way today...(unless I cheat)

Cheat?!? Drivers don't cheat, do they...??

I have a personal dilemma. My nephew wants to be a driver. He wants to team drive with me. I'd love that. He's had a hard life and recently lost his mom. He's undereducated and lacks a GED, so his work options are very limited.
I want to help the kid out and help him achieve his dream of making a wage as a driver.
Here's the problem: he's 21.
Minimum age to drive with the Co I'm leased to is 23. It's an insurance issue.
Now I think I can present different options.
A) beat it kid, ya bother me
B) go get the CDL with a mega and I wish you well
C) wait to get your CDL until age 23
D) present my company with a pitch to pay the extra cost for a younger driver and let him come on after CDL school and team for a bit.
E) jump to a mega and team with him, wasting the last 2 years towards my endgame
I hope there is a mutually beneficial choice that can be made. -
Hope you can talk to your company and see if they will work with you and him. It is worth a shot anyhow.
-
Agree, I would talk with my company first and then make a decision based on what they tell you.

It's worth the conversation, but it's tough to get around insurance requirements.
Oh, and 'E' should not be on the table. Working for a mega for a couple of years might not be a bad thing if he can swing it. He's got some negatives...popcorn169 and Wickedfire77 Thank this. -
Now it is the insurance company who pretty much dictates who you can hire. But it is worth a shot. As DD said mega might be his only option for a while.
-
IF he picks the right Mega, it's not such a bad deal....Schneider, Maverick, TMC, Quality Carriers....all have good reps...I did 18 months with Maverick and don't regret it one bit....
DenaliDad and Wickedfire77 Thank this. -
Another thought - and I have no idea about requirements - is one of the FedEx Ground contractors. You know the ones...the guys who think speed limits are for everybody else. They all run teams, so it might be worth looking into if a job change becomes that important.
-
I considered them but their trucks don't have an APU; that's a personal requirement I have.Wickedfire77 Thanks this.
