Don't listen to anyone fully. Take the advice with a grain of salt. I'm a lease o/o and doing pretty dang good at it. (1800-2800)dollars avg so far. The sucking part is i have to train to see this amount but once I save to what I need which is 3k more $ I'll get one from a dealer. The reason I did it this way is to get the feeling. If I didn't like it, then I turn it in no harm done, but if I would have went straight to it like everyone else is saying and failed then I'm stuck with a note and possibly a repo on my credit report. This roller coaster economy is nothing to play with concerning your personal $. Once this economy crash again and it will, then we'll see what these big boys are talking about then. Weather you lease or stay company, you still paying for that truck. Just don't lease a p.o.s with 500k miles on it like I did the first time around. (Stayed in the hole) with breakdowns.

Only do lease at a company that pays percentage. Never do it by the mile.
Then find out if they have lease guys who are making money.
If you like being home regular you need a company that has freight in and out of your area you live.
Best paying freight is flat bed, tanker and reefer. Oversized loads pays best but its hard to get into that type driving.

True. As long as your business plan is set up that way, and the math works. Many of drivers never own the trucks, but do pretty well.

l would take it one step further, and calculate that if I cant make 50k clear sitting at home while paying a driver to drive my truck, there is zero value in the business

Ok so why does everyone talk about leasing a truck from a carrier rather than leasing a truck directly from the manufacturer, like international, volvo, peterbilt and so on...from what ive been reading, its no different than leasing a car from ford or other places...leasing is always cheaper than buying. I used a lease calculator and figured that $120,000 lease over 42 months would run you about $1500 a month. Am i just ignorant or does this not seem like the better way to go....please give me feedback anyone

If you can get a dealer to lease you a truck, that would be a better way to go. That way, you can take the truck to any carrier.
I don't know how many dealers would lease to an individual.

PacLease, Penske, Ryder all lease to individuals, but I believe they may require a deposit of around 5 grand. On the good side total maintence can be rolled into the payment. Somewhere around $.10 a mile including tires.
