As I'm sure the negative comments will make this a waste of time I'll give it a shot incase there is one helpful comment. I did a lease last year and after 1500 a week expenses not including fuel. After all with fuel I still netted over 80k. I felt I didn't work hard for that income. Now I just bought a new truck and considering getting my own authority and taking my truck from prime to maybe landstar or panther to learn load boards. Is the increased cost of insurance and fuel worth the move. I want the control of my loads. I averaged 1.35 a mile for the year. I see guys complain about getting anything under 2.00 a mile. Is it just greed or is insurance and fuel that much more. What do you need to make per mile to break 100k net

It won't seem like greed at all when you get out here and try it. You'll figure out fairly quick how far a cheap $2 rate doesn't go when you're supplementing it with all the prevalent sub-$2 rates out here and adding in unpaid miles plus all the extra costs.

$80,000 is not bad. whats needed to survive is a open ended question. what I need to survive depends on my circumstances & of course lifestyle choices. looking at your numbers, you are doing well considering your cost. I have always been a leased o/o so I cannot comment on going alone. I do know there is a lot of time & effort into getting your own loads. good luck.

    bomoto Thanks this.

Get out and try it ? The only difference between me and you is i don't get to pick my loads. My insurance and Gas is cheaper. My new truck cost 1k a week plus about another 500 for insurance and all other fees. My question was does insurance and less fuel discount really that much higher for a owner op. How much of a average rate do you need to make 100k a year.

May I ask how many miles you run a year?

A 160,000 truck with no down would be about $700 a week. What are you buying?

I'm in a 2016 freightliner lease new I've put 70k miles on it.. My 2017 auto with built in scale, all the new safety equipment will be in in a few weeks. The 16 was just a rental as far as I'm concerned. The 17 will cost me 170k in total for the 3 year loan. The price thru prime was actually about the same if I went thru freightliner dealership. I have great credit but by the time I added all the full price extras a the warrenty was 5 year 500k the prime deal was less money.

I don't see why anyone would finance a truck more than 3 years. 4k a month for a new truck isn't to bad. My first load of the week usually covers my weekly payment. I should get a minimum 5 years life out of it. If I goes longer I'll be happy but if it has issues I'll dump it right before warrenty goes out.

    Caution negative comment

    1500 a week is 78,000 a year,plus 80,000 net equals 158,000 plus fuel.
    100,000 miles a year at 1.35 equals 135,000.
    Something doesn't add up.
