Question about box trucks

    Not a new driver, but new to box trucks. Do box trucks, weight 25,950, have to stop at WY POE? Thanks!

    ETA: I should clarify that I just picked up this truck at an auction and am driving it back to my boss. No DOT number, not for hire, dealer plate. I'm not a transporter, I work for the dealership.

    It's a commercial vehicle because of its classification not whether it is for hire or not

    Can somebody else confirm this? If it's a commercial vehicle shouldn't I be stopping at all scales? And yet I've driven it from NJ to NE so far and passed all scales and DOT hasn't chased me down after any of them. I thought commercial meant "conducting commerce". Which I'm not. Isn't that why some vehicles put "Not for Hire" on their vehicles so they don't get hassled by DOT?

    I would say that you should go in and let the guys at the POE make the determination as to whether or not they want to send you on your way or subject you to a more "formal" inspection. Better safe than sorry. ;)

    It is a commercial vehicle because a company bought it and it will be used for commerce.

    Why is he sending you out for it, have it transported back to the company.

    By the way "not for hire" is meaningless in the real world.

    It's under 26,000 lbs, I thought that was the cutoff for commercial vehicles. The owner is not using it for commercial purposes; he's a dealer who bought it at auction to resell. I'm not even taking it to the new buyer, I'm taking it to the dealer.

    I'm pretty sure I don't need to stop, I was just looking for confirmation. I only ask because I know WY is picky. I was actually wondering more about the dealer tag than I was worried about being considered commercial.

    Like others have said, it's still a commercial vehicle...Me, I would stop and let them wave me through vs don't stop and get a big $$$ ticket, but suit yourself.....Pleading ignorance in this business won't get you far......

    The cut off for commercial vehicles is 10k if you are crossing state lines.

    We have work 3/4 ton pickups that pull bumper pull trailers and gross under 15k and they have to go through scales, keep log books, etc when crossing state lines. No CDL is required but all the other junk applies.
