One thing I have never seen in these forums is details about health insurance provided by companies. In todays world, simply saying company XYZ has "good" insurance is no longer a measuring stick as plans vary wildly even on the govt. exchanges. While this might not be the most important benefit to the 20 somethings who never go to the Doc, for us 50 somethings coming into the industry, it is a huge consideration. What I am interested in are details such as deductible amounts, employee contributions, copays, maximum out of pocket expenses and types of plans, ie: 80/20 plans. Are some companies providing insurance details to prospective drivers before making a decision to come to orientation?

I realize this is a simplistic answer, but union companies have the best price on health insurance. There's not that many around though that hire new cdl grads.
Nick Strimbu Inc. is union I think.
This company hires new cdl grads.

I highly recommend if you are single with no children and a veteran to get your care at the VA. I even used the VA to get my last DOT physical. Because I did not use company insurance I can't answer your question. I will note however from what I have been hearing most of the megacarriers health plans are more alike then not.

Thats what I am curious about. Are they all much the same from the mega or is there some better than others. I currently have insurance thru Cobra from my employer i retired from. It is top notch, $250 deductible 80/20 plan with $3,000 max out of pocket. I would hate to give that up and spend years bouncing around from sub standard policy to the next one.

I really need to get set up on the Tricare Reserve Select plan, I keep neglecting it....
That being said, TRS won't cover a DOT physical, I had to pay $75 out of pocket.

There is one of the Doctors at the Hampton VAMC her name is Anita S. She is listed in the Medical Examiners database. She did my last physical.

Edited to add if anyone would be interested in trying to find her for a physical send me a private message and I will give you this information.

There is a big difference from someone that retired from the military than someone that did less and does not receive a check every month isn't there?

Yes, I served a hitch in the Air Force with a one year extension from dec 1975 to dec 1980. I get no money or anything like that, but with this Obamacare thing the VA is my primary care giver and this satisfies me under that.

That's interesting. Buddy of mine did 4 yrs. in the Air Force back in the 1960's and when he was discharged he was given a VA Medical Card or whatever it's called. That's all he's used his whole life. The Navy didn't tell us anything about that other than to get that benefit you must have a Purple Heart, which I learned later is BS. Congratulations to the Air Force for better informing their people of that benefit.

I think your misunderstanding some of this. For most of the time after my discharge because I had no service connected injury I could not get VA care. It's just been in the last several years that the VA because things like Obamacare and the huge amount of service connected stuff coming from our involvement in the middle east has opened up and made me eligible.
