Why isn't a high school diploma or GED required for getting a CDL and working at a trucking company?
I mean, if they're going to regulate the eyes of out the industry, wouldn't mandating a diploma/GED make sense? They require the ability to read English, but as we've seen that rule is pretty lax. A piece of paper from an accredited school would definitely be better than what they're doing now to verify someone can read the language.
Doesn't McDonalds even ask for a diploma or GED?

Over the years I've learned that a HS diploma or GED isn't all it's cracked up to be. Using myself as an example, I don't have either. Yet, I have over a million accident-free miles.
These days I work in the entertainment industry where I'm a one-man show and in charge of a multi-million dollar account. I drive the truck, build the show, maintain the gear, and maintain client relations. On paper I'm not qualified for the job at all, yet I'm the best at they've ever come across, by a long shot.
And I'm from a generation where we were told we'd be homeless if we didn't get a college degree, I'm only 35.Mattflat362, Toomanybikes, DC818 and 6 others Thank this. -
Funny how that works.
You need one or the other to join the military. Or go to college.
But in everyday life. I don't think anyone worries about it. BUT, i've only had 2 lowly life professions. Auto mechanic and now truck driver.
I guess maybe a blue collar worker or a lawyer or something.
My momma always told me i'd amount to nothing with no high school diploma. So, here i am approaching 50. Never had to worry about the diploma. But i don't amount to anything either. But, hey, I've still got rubber checks.

More regulations?
perhapss its best to leave it up too whom ever is hiring. -
Yea, but this one might actually benefit drivers in the long run.
And the people without it now can be 'grandfathered', just like they were when CDLs became a thing.
It's just silly to turn someone loose with 80,000lbs these days without some proof that they should be able to read all of the road signs. -
Having a H/S or ged or even a AS/BS doesn't mean anything hasn't for years. And Some of the brightest in our country don't have them some even dropped out before high school good thing is 90% of companies don't care if you have it as long as you can do the jobANSUN Thanks this. -
I could see if your fresh out of high school. But once you've been in the workforce. I don't see how it matters anymore.
How many of you actually have your diploma still. Cuz i certainly don't. Haven't seen it since it was given to me.Sneakerfix Thanks this. -
