In Ohio you can, 53' load or trailer. The big construction company I worked for used to cut the scrap steel beams from bridges to 53' and we hauled them on 48' flats all over the state. What gets a lot of guys is they think front overhang doesn't matter, if you're pulling a 48 with 5' of rear overhang you better not have any over the front. If you're over 4' of rear overhang you are required to flag it and if it's over 2' wide they want 2 flags marking the widest part of the overhang.

Good to know. Were you guys on back roads? So at or under 10' we don't need permits in Ohio?

I have a 102" wide deck so 10 feet gives me 9" on each side...

That was on any road. In Ohio you need a permit for anything over 102" wide, 53' long, or 13'6" tall. You can get a blanket for width up to 12' but not for length or height, that has to be a trip permit. Keep in mind if you're running on a blanket you have to run your oversize load signs even if you're an inch overwidth. If you're on a trip permit and the stated width is under 10' you don't need your signs.
