So I've been driving for a year now. I don't really stop at truck stops, since I'd just stay at Walmart, cause I am dedicated. I can back at any store and back at any yard and back hauls, doesn't matter. I get to this pilot just now, and I am lost. I usually do the hook, but I can't do it, there is not enough room. How you guys do it? Please show me the ways of OTR
Backing...at truck stops

give it some time......folks will start pulling out shortly and you'll have your choice of spots
tucker Thanks this. -
No different than a tight door at a dock, drive across the nose of the other trucks and when your trailer is in around the middle of the spot basically U-turn at that point. When your ALMOST straight cut the other way and you should line up. You almost never have room to let your trailer do the work at a truck stop, ya gotta force it. Everybody's been there man. I was at a Pilot in Roanoke, VA the other day and NO exaggeration it was the size (and was) a car gas station, It was completely insane. You could either weigh and block the place, pull thought the pumps and nose into a guard rail (like 10 spots) and then back out basically into the trucks at the pumps , everybody sucked there.
NavigatorWife and ZhenyaP1991 Thank this. -
Well over the years I have seen drivers park in front of in the rear of and along side of the CAT scales. You also might want to park in a fuel island. Don't forget there are curbs all over the truck stop just find one and park, just disregard the trucks you will block in by doing so. Since some truck stop have both an entrance and exit its OK to block one. Oh if someone says anything to you just repeat the truckers mantra about 10 hour break and you have the Marshal's on speed dial.

There is not an easy way to describe, and everyone is different...
1 rule that helps avoid damage to anything on your blindside, you want your trailer tandems at least as far from the trucks your backing into as the overhang of your trailer. <--Meaning if your tandems are set at 45' on a 53' trailer there is 8' of overhang. your tandems should be 8' perpendicular to the other trucks bumper. Next do your setup, everyone is different... but your tandems centre should be nearly even with yellow line. Start with your wheel cut all the way to the right, and swing it back when its obvious your too close on the drivers side. This will force you to do more pull ups, but it keeps you from running to the back (G.O.A.L.) for every attempt.3031 and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
As long as you don't hit another truck you're good to go.... practice makes almost perfect....LOL
-
Like women, some are just tighter than others. If you don't hit mom and pop or many ltl type stops and only hit wide open Walmarts, it can challenge you at some of the tighter ones.
Just take your time and don't be shy or proud, GOAL as often as you need to. No need to think you can when knowing is only 53' away!thejackal, _dsgb and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
Saw a guy dropping nails in front of tires and yanking fifth wheels yesterday to these type of drivers.
-
Yeah those types of drivers usually return quickly to the profession they were in before getting a CDL...
