Ham radio conversion

There's a guy named doc up near Erie Pennsylvania that supposedly specializes in those radios But you will be lucky to hear 10 miles up the road after he gets done working on it so I would not recommend him

 

Is it for sale? And if so how much?

Do not believe I just read this. On a 2510? Really? You isolate pins 34, 35 on the CPU from the rest of the circuitry, then feed them 5 volts through a 10K resistor, assuming you do not go the 'Chipswitch' route. The 2510 and relatives is a superior work of design for a radio in its price range. I have no doubt it is a good bet more 10-10 work has been done with this series (includes the Lincoln and 2600) since the 1980's than any other single model line. Very tight and clean RX with decent spectral purity in the LO's. Far better than any other 'Export' model. Since it has AM it is 2 KC wider than the HTX100, which only does SSB. Anyone 'not liking' it for 10 or 11 meter receive needs a better technician. Sure was not the fault of the radio. One clue would be looking at a set of three 7mm cans covered with a paper labeled 'admit no adjustment'. If you see holes punched in the paper done by someone without great skill and a Specan, trade it for one that was not touched since the factory.

 

I'd get it wired for a normal power plug as well while they had the covers off. (cobra/galaxy type). Another great mod if you are going to use this radio for a base with a power mic. is have the mic cord wired to deliver the proper voltage to the power mike so you don't have to use a battery. There are enough wires in the cord to do that if you don't use the stock mic. The Astatic D-104 hand mic works really well with the 2510.........

 

I'd always thought the chipswitch was the only way to expand the freqs on those radios. Is there a difference in coverage or stability when not useing the chipswitch?

 

The chipswitch alters the menu functions But is unnecessary to convert it to 11 meters.

 

I picked up a President Washington base CB/SSB, not working so well at the moment, good radio worth fixing, yea or nay?

 

Oh yeah!! At least have it checked out... washingtons are real good radios.

 

http://rogerbird.tripod.com/ is probably the best authority concerning mods for this model. 26.000 MHz to 29.999 MHz is the simple conversion range, the bottom end is 24.8 MHZ for the Chipswitch route. Since the PLL was not designed to go this low most often modification is required for a stable lock. Stability is good assuming lock is stable, not a problem if your tech is decent. Never let them talk you into the RIT mod to make it slide, no point in trashing a fine radio. The manual for the Chipswitch is a long read since so many new functions are created using a scheme of multiplexing the front panel buttons. If you can go this route take the time to learn the operation. Far cheaper to go the simple conversion route and most likely you would seldom use all the added functions the Chipswitch gives.

 

Rgr that BZ....I had heard that they were a good radio, but how so?..What makes them better than most?....Anyone care to elaborate, thanks.........
