Because it is hard physical work, long hours, city traffic, and a lot of tight places. A lot of guys are not cut out for it, or simply too lazy.
Also, you can't do it in flip flops, sweatpants, and a tank top.
Food for thought

First of all, food service has more turnover than LTL freight does typically. So Sysco is in its own category. They make good money, but those guys work their ##### off for it, and it gets harder and harder for older guys to do that type of work.
As far as Holland is concerned, they have problems with their current union contract that forced them to give up 15% of their pay and nearly all of the pension contributions the company had been putting in. So even long time Holland drivers are jumping ship for other companies. They are so desperate for drivers that they are hiring rookies, but they don't tell them about the 15% pay cut before they begin work.
Holland used to be one of the best LTL freight jobs around, but when YRC bought them, they have been part of that giant sinking ship. It used to be one of those jobs that didn't need to advertise, but now they have ads up all over the place. That is generally not the case with most LTL freight companies.
My information comes from being a city driver for an LTL company and talking to drivers working for the other LTL companies all day long.
And yes, most linehaul drivers make between 90 and $100,000 per year. Those aren't just stories they tell. A linehaul driver I know at my company made over $2,300 one recent week.ajohnson Thanks this. -

"Copy that" Bob....
I know you ain't tellin a lie
That whole 15% give back thing stinks to high heaven, especially for the Holland guys
YRC has been suckling the life out of Holland ever since the buy out
They have managed to keep a few of perks tho
Free full health care coverage, OT after 8, but they have taken a real hit on backside on issues like retirement, 401k, & teamster pensions
Those guys all say they are ready to fight tooth & nail on next agreement in 2019 if they have to fight not sure, how that will turn out we wish em the best, they have set the standards for our wages in the master freight agreement , let's hope they don't loose any more ground.... Not that I'm a big fan of unions, I just know the power of unity gets things done quicker than anything else
Those little American rebels had to stick together close in order to defeat the biggest army of the world at that time ( the English) so unions are basic American democracy in raw formLast edited: Jan 27, 2016
