Basically unless you're going to California, you can set your tandem to the 43' mark to the rear axle and be legal pretty much everywhere on the interstate system.

He wasn't even licensed, he got all his knowledge from living on a farm. Cool but not really legit as far as credential go

We also taught ourselves the majority of the time. They'd give us a quick briefing on some knowledge then it was just me and a bunch of other guys trying to figure out what we were taught for 90 seconds. Our work book and each other were the best instructors we had cuz they were always busy preping a new crop of drivers. They had more students then trainers. Lots of money coming in but not too much knowledge. I'd go more than a week without driving cuz there was a lot of favoritism. If you weren't in like me you kind of got the shaft. As for the low supervision thing, we often had no instructor when we operated trucks in the yard. Which is why we had a near fight that I had to break up and a jack knife and they didn't even know.Last edited: Dec 12, 2015

That explains a lot. Now we know where you're coming from. Keep asking questions and discard the BS you sometimes get for asking. Also, most drivers you meet in person will be decent and try to help you out. Any time there's anonymity involved (on the CB or Internet, for example) you'll encounter more jerks.

Generalizations will get a driver into Trouble.
Several States: Fl., NH, RI, Va & D.C. allow kingpin length of up to 41'. Try 43' and your tempting fate. Be professional...be conservative.
Having said a simple truth, if ur in a pinch and your gross wt. is less than 73,280lbs while length is less than 55' tandem axle weight is 40,680...but I wouldn't use this model just anywhere. -
I run 43' in Virginia all the time and have never been stopped. Thats because 43' is legal in Virginia. 41' to center of the tandems is basically 43' to the rear axle.
I even had the Connecticut DOT run out and measure me and give me the thumbs up. -
Question.
My truck and float (spread axle) weigh 34,500
So i can only pay load at 45,500
Most shippers want 48,000
My truck is rated at
Steers: 14,500
Drives: 42,000
So what do i need to do to haul more then 80k ?
Some state let me register for 85,000 but some wont. Any sugestions? -
APUs are common on airplanes as well. The difference is that the APU supply's air pressure to start the jet engines.
