I was back in Maryland for this past snow storm, and my dad says to me, you should see if the state road needs any plow drivers for the storm. I can't imagine its that easy thou, just showing them your CDL, and having them put you in a plow truck. I would prob need to do the DOT physical and all the BS. But I figured I would ask, Anyone have any experience with any temporary/emergency plow work?

Most places have full time drivers and on call seasonal drivers for backup. I was a seasonal on call driver for a suburb of chicago a couple years ago. I had to get a physical and go through the hiring process in early october, then was on call until april. There were a lot of on call guys some had other jobs, some did not. They just went down the list calling people until they had enough. If you said yes most of the time, you got called first. They paid a lot more than my regular job at the time, so whenever they called I called in sick at my other job.LoneCowboy and White_Knuckle_Newbie Thank this.

Here is Chicago like most other areas when a huge storm is coming they put plows on garbage trucks and other trucks from the streets and sanitation department... Those drivers that are full time garbage men and what not are trained to plow snow also.
White_Knuckle_Newbie and ajohnson Thank this. -
Yea, I have seen the garbage truck plows, but they don't do that in MD.
HalpinUout Thanks this. -
I'm pretty sure nyc is big on putting plows on their garbage trucks

MD does a great job, so they probably use more trucks and drivers. I used to live near the line with PA, the PA road would be snow and slush, go across the line and the MD road would be dry. I'd be proud to work for an outfit that does that kind of work.

Where abouts in MD did you live speedyk? I used to live in Taneytown,Md about 15 mins from Gettysburg,pa

I was south of Red Lion off 74. Used to work in Baltimore, so I crossed that snow/dry line quite a few times. Plus, the best crabcakes were in that direction. :^)

I did that for awhile in Colorado back when they first opened the toll road around Denver. But that was a private entity, not the state. Paid very well. We got $30/hr to hang around and wait anytime the forecast mentioned snow. 12 hour shifts. Through the winter averaging 30 hours a week. Probably only spent 15% of the hours I was paid actually plowing.
Maybe see if the airport needs help pushing snow? -
I used to see the MD DOT trucks parked in a bank parking lot right over the line, just idling and waiting. Looked like a great gig to me.
