I'm surprised chaining up is not part of the process of getting a CDL. I used to ride in the bush with my dad all the time as a teen and we'd chain up 2 sometimes 3 times a day just to make it up and down the mountain.

Snow chain use is more of a regional thing here in the civilized world. Things are different up there in uncivilized Canada.

I see your point there. Still its a useful skill to have that could save your bacon one day.NavigatorWife Thanks this.

I chuckle at the adage, "You only chain up to get out of trouble, never to get into trouble". I view chains as a tool to get the job done. Two winters ago I stayed pretty busy, running a dozen round trips from LA to Denver, chaining most of the passages over the Rockies. Other times I wish I had chained even when they weren't required.
Learn all the tools of the trade and learn to drive in poor conditions. Just because you WANT to park it if conditions get bad doesnt mean a safe parking spot will be there.striker, TripleSix and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
I never chained a day in my life and I managed to get it done when I needed to do it this winter. Sometimes being thrown into it head first without a helmet is the best way to learn.
striker, NavigatorWife, Lepton1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I remember more than once we'd pull over on the highway and dad would throw one triple on. All the while the steering wheel holders are laughing at the dumb loggers. Needless to say we were the ones laughing when we passed them spun out halfway up the hill.NavigatorWife and Lepton1 Thank this.

I have been checked twice for them while going through CO in the last three years. I have put them on more times than I care to count.
