This is not me encouraging you to go without chains, or anything. Usually they just ask if you have chains without doing a visual confirmation. Now that I've said this, they probably will. Especially at the Dumont scale.

You need to carry enough chains for 4 tires. 1 set of triple rails or 2 sets of singles. Only place I've been checked is at Dumont, or the 1st chain up area west of Dumont.

Just tell them you are descended from African slaves and you object to being forced to use chains.

I tried those once, but they gave me blisters.

I stopped to get chains but they didn't have a chain inspection, although I didn't have to scale due to prepass so I don't know if they were. Vail Pass was shut down for awhile because of an accident. At that point I wished I could have taken I-80 but I have a light load so probably better to just stay out of windy Wyoming. Plus my bunk heater hasn't worked the last four nights so I'm sure Grand Junction will be warmer than anywhere on I-80.

It's not really a new rule. It has been in force for years. The law requires that you do have them with you during chain up season. In Cortez, Co on Hwy 491, there is nothing that even closely resembles a mountain pass for the entire length of 491 which I believe is about 75 miles long but those bast#rds will fine you for not having them.

Elevation of Cortez is 6200 feet. No mountains, but it tends to attract snowfall. Add the fact that snowplows don't run at night and a two lane highway with no shoulders and a stuck truck will be a major headache.
