Here's a question for guys dealing with heavy loads and wet roads...I'm driving an Aussie road train with 2 trailers grossing out at 176,000 lb. It's pissing heavy rain and in about 4 hours I'll be going up a 7% grade of about 2 miles and the road is slippery. Last time I went up there I had spin-out 3 times, first time I thought I jumped out of gear, second time I thought clutch was slipping, third time I thought the truck was having serious problems somewhere. Wasn't until I got to the top I realised what was happening.
So, would you guys use the power divider lock? I'm down to 12 mph at full power (600 HP and 46,000 lb Eatons). Locking up the power divider with all that power going through it at such a low speed is a bit of a worry.
Wet roads and spin-out

Lock in the power divider before you start up the hill. You can switch it on while moving as long as you're not spinning on ice. Just be careful going down the other side with the engine brake on. It can cause you to fishtail leading to a jacknife if both axles lock up.
Ozdriver and americanmadetrucker Thank this. -
I'd probably lock the power divider but not the axles......
What kind of tread pattern are you using for drives..? Is this pass dirt?Ozdriver Thanks this. -
Won't help much to lock in axle. Problem is you have too much dead weight and not an especially lot of weight on the drives.
Best thing you can do is insure that you have the heaviest nose on your truck and the lightest trailer is at the back of the train.
And to compound the situation... The steeper you climb, the less weight is on the drives to help them grip. -
They are Bridgestone M722, deep tread highway spec, but they are on their last trip before I get a new set.
It's bitumen, but with slippery patches of shiny stuff. You wouldn't want to go up it on a motorbike in this weather. I don't have cross locks, just the power divider lock.
The way the rpm shot up to 2100 with most likely just the one wheel spinning was a worry. -
Both trailers the same weight. 36,376 lb on the drive.

No worries unless you hit a dry patch....... That wouldn't be pretty.
Good luck..Ozdriver Thanks this. -
The other thing is you can take a run at the hill at about 55 mph but you've got to go around a pretty sharp curve at the bottom and I wouldn't want to do that with the power divider locked in at that speed.
I was wondering if you guys experience spin-out and if it worries you. -
Your problem is exaggerated but even if you could get all wheels to apply torque, at some point you will have insufficient traction to pull X weight up X% grade
This is the same reason we have mandatory chain laws in our more mountainous states in winter.Ozdriver Thanks this. -
Mine will spin the tires (I use all postion tires in the summer) when mt especially if it hasn't rained in a while.... So yes I worry....
Feather the right foot baby!!!!
I gotta believe those tires are not helping you....... And you can run the power divider @ 55 . For a short time in the rain. I wouldn't worry about it around the corner if it's raining that hard your wheels will not have max traction . So it won't bind up...Ozdriver Thanks this.
