Never worked with either company but I've read the threads.
Mercer is better for flatbed freight. Land star is better for Van. That seems to be the general idea of things.
Also with mercer you can buy your trailer from them. Payments are about $500 and it seems like a pretty good deal.

When asking anyone about what the going rates are, understand that you are asking that person for the combination to their safe, or the password to their online bank account. You absolutely need to know what your costs are going to be and how much profit you need in order to find the rate that YOU need. Yes it is me in picture... 2 years 6 months driver other 6 owner and 1 year my Owen autority and get in loads my self .... I'm 24 the picture it's where I was 20
