Was wondering if anyone had a suggested route from Gallup, Nm to Salt Lake City, Ut. I have taken a dedicated round trip temp position, going to be in the area for a few months for some personal business and I am just not sure of what would be the best routing. Currently looking at SR491 North out of Gallup up to Utah then SR191 North to Interstate 70 West to SR50 to Interstate 15 North. Just wondering if anyone has ever run that routing, what the roads are like and what conditions they are usually in during the winter months. Thanks.

Yeah, that's the preferred route. Good roads, can get lonely out there if something goes wrong. A few mountains and all, but it's the intermountain west, so that's always a consideration. Good route, I've been there about a dozen runs, good roads, well maintained.

Yep. It's almost 100 miles OOR to go over to 50.

Good road and the Utah road crews do a pretty good job in the winter.

Colorado on the other hand.....I think the CDOT bosses send the dimwitted guys to work in Dolores and Montezuma counties because if there's any stretch of that road that will be snowpacked and icy, it will be US491 from the NM line to the Utah line.

The guys at the Monticello scales aren't the friendliest on the planet.

PackRat has good information. That stretch from Gallup to Colorado is Navajo Reservation jurisdiction, for what that's worth. As for the Colorado stretch, if you're following the salt shaker you'll be fine. Otherwise, maybe not so much.

Being on the Navajo reservation means you better slow down for those 45 mph zones in the small towns and especially the no fly zone north of Gallup.

And be prepared to chain up. I had to chain up between Dove Creek and Cortez this winter on 491.

On the plus side, you have ample places to park and rest on that route.

3 rest areas (4 if southbound), 9 truck stops and tons of turn outs and wide spots
