Pricing a new glider at Fitz.; $10,000 more for 14L Det. and N14 Cummings ???

My 6nz glider does awesome on fuel... burns every drop I put in it.

 

Don't blame you on the freightshaker. I thought that the 12.7 pulled a little better than my c13 but it is more hp though. The other week I grossed 106,000 lbs from Detroit to AL down I75 and grossed 80,000 from Nashville back to Detroit and the 12.7 got the job done. I wasn't the first to the top of the hill but I thought it held its own but I've never driven a 550 cat either. Oh the rears were 3.42's.
I work with a guy who has a DDEC3 12.7 w/ the PP power box, manifold and turbo and claims to out pull 550 cats. So I guess with mods you could get a 12.7 to perform.

 

Just a little correction. The series 60 isn't prone to oil leaks, at least no more than any other diesel engine available today. The Detroit rep for oil leaking is from the 71 series.

If you set up the truck right a 12.7 will provide more than enough power to drag 80k around, and do it more efficiently than a big cat. But if you will be doing heavy haul, you are better off with a big well built 6nz cat.

 

Lol... Sounds a lot like the ever popular "Ford Chevy" debate. Do Ya'll remember when we was pulling oversize and 80,000 + with 310 Cats and 300 formula cummins? I do. Also remember when the "Cat guys" got butt hurt because a 475 Silver 92 Detroit dusted their 3406B 425 too, but either engine would do a good job. You don't need 600 hp to pull 80,000 but it is good to run with traffic as much as possible. Do what saves you money, now or later.

 

And keep in mind.... A good motor is only PART of the equation to a good truck, helps to have a good driver too.

 

That depends more on the driver in my opinion.

 

How about a 237 Mack with a straight 5 speed! It was a rocket compared to the old
Viking with a 5 and 2!!
Or when moved up to the 300Plus Mack with a ten speed, made so much power put doubles behind it.... talk about slow freight!!

We asked an Old timer mechanic friend who's truck would pull the best, in the group all the makers was represented, His reply was
"Get me a 7/16" wrench and will make this one go like hell, then we can play with that one, then this one and so on and so forth.. we can make anyone out pull the other but the real question is which will grenade first?? I'll tell ya one thing, we'll spend alotta money and have alotta fun."

I never saw it or heard it, but I heard stories of my dad's Jimmie. It had a 4-71, 5x3 with 2 speed rear end that had a levershift on the dash. If he went without his dog, the dog would start biting my mother when he was a mile away! He bragged that he got a speeding ticket in it, once.
