A 400 big cam is 400 horsepower, anyone saying different doesn't know any better. A 425 cat is 425hp. People just don't realize that's what it means I guess and they call every big cam or b model cat by that name. You can turn the fuel up a little on either motor and still be reliable and have plenty of power. Rpms is dependent a lot on gearing of the truck what kind of weight your hauling and how the engine is set up. The older motors need a little more rpm than computer controlled ones. Around 1500 cruising is what I like to see on my trucks. It comes down to personal preference a lot, both engines will do you a good job and the older style electronic engines like the 3406e n14 and series 60 pre egr will all do a great job as well.

A properly set up old Cummins is nothing to be ashamed of. You may need to rebuild them earlier than an old Cat but they are dependable, cheap, and easy to fix. On a limited budget I would take an old comapart before an old Cat any day. Nothing better than blowing off some guy's mirrors with something he never expected. If you live or work in a communist or tree hugger state you may need to think differently.
kiwi23, OLDSKOOLERnWV and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Cat rates hp off the ground. Cummins rates hp off the flywheel.
kiwi23 Thanks this. -
Please explain who told you that? I would like to correct them and correct you and say that's wrong and I will guarantee it. It's impossible to rate off the ground win any accuracy. Cat and cummins make engines and not transmissions or rearends. Really obnoxious when people post on here obsurd misinformation.
kiwi23 Thanks this. -
WRONG!
-
its flywheel horsepower, there may be some rare exceptions but in general it is flywheel horsepower
-
That's what ive always been told.
-
Like I said, by who? Be sure to relay the message to them to quit saying that and spreading lies
-
Maybe in the 70s with the 1693 to cheat the insurance a little, but not these days, all engines are rated at the flywheel, that is the only consistent way of repeating results.

Live in the upper mid west wi mn boarder. Not far from the twin citys. Right now I'm looking at flat pretty hard also looking in to a couple tanker leads I know there's a hand full of guys round tomah wi that haul fuel with some nice rigs. Kane is looking for o o in eau claire wi and out of the twin citys. Havent looked too hard in to them yet as far as pay and stuff. Trying to get a jist of what my expense would be. I'm lookin at one 359 with a b model cat and a 13 speed has 22.5 and I don't whatgears it has in the rear ends how ever it needs paint and drives brakes are new and has new steer tires. Has a small coolant leak by water pump also. So I'm thinking to get it on the road with out pain just make it a solid truck ill have close to 3k in tires and pump... just guessing this figure. I'd have bout 14k in to at that point been starting to look for a nice 379 with a 60s detroit. Dont really care bout paint cause what ever I buy will get repainted as soon as a buddy has time. Found one in Sc for 22 k I think with a new inframe he did the work but injectors are being tested and turbo needs to be installed still... would be willing to spend a little more on something that was freshened up with paper work....
