Alrighty. So, about 2 weeks ago I apply to Werner. They say they have some positions that fit what I'm looking for pay and home time-wise, so hey, let's move forward.
Employment verification done, background checks, etc. Faxing in paperwork, whatever. So we're ready to schedule orientation, however I have a few questions about Werner's Detention Pay policy, as this is also a big deal for me. It wasn't made clear earlier in our conversations so I wanted it clarified before scheduling a date for orientation.
This was my email to the recruiter:
Yes Ma'am, thank you. I can't find any information on Werner's detention pay policy. Do you know where this information can be found and is the detention pay policy relevant for dedicated accounts as well. I am also of the understanding that some of your accounts are driver load/unload. Is this the case with the ****** account? I apologize for the barrage of questions, but this information cannot be found on your website.
Thank you,
*My name*
Her response was:
Detention pay is up to the discretion of your dispatcher, we don't have a set amount for that. The ******* account is not a driver unload account. I got your verification back from ****** so just need to hear back from you as far as what the best start date will be. When would you like to do the orientation next week? Monday, Wednesday or Friday? Also, I tried calling you and both of the phone numbers I have on file are disconnected. Do you have a new number?
Thanks,
*Her name*
Concerned about the "dispatcher discretion" part, I call her to get some clarification. She then gives me the run around about how the detention is $50 per day. I point out to her that that is LAYOVER pay, not DETENTION pay, and that there is a difference. We were both calm cool and respectful the entire time but then she started to get frustrated because I kept trying to get her to explain the "dispatcher discretion" part. Is it based on on time delivery record? How much they like you? If you're a vegetarian or not? Who you plan on voting for? Detention pay is a huge deal to drivers and "dispatcher discretion" simply doesn't do much to explain this. Finally she claims that she's "uncomfortable" and "doesn't think Werner will work out", so she cancels my application and hangs up the phone.
Conclusion: Werner recruiters seem to be very much incompetent and unprepared for basic inquiries about their positions and policies. So if you happen to be talking to a Werner recruiter and for some reason REALLY want to work there, don't hurt their feelings by asking questions about the job. Just shut up, go to orientation and bend over.
~Peace to all and safe driving~

I wasn't "pushy", but I did explain to her that I have been lied to before by recruiters, and that I would appreciate an honest and direct answer to my question. I wasn't asking for a specific amount, I was just asking what the detention policy was. Basically, they don't have one. That's essentially what she meant to say which is why it's no big deal about her cancelling the application, because I refuse to drive for companies that just throw my time away at these shippers/receivers. I'm just wanting to help out any other prospective drivers. Stop letting these companies screw you out of your most valuable resource: Time. I've got 3 years experience, clean record, no accident/moving violations. Werner had a dedicated account and their terminal is literally 2 exits down from me off of I-20 in Atlanta. However, no detention pay = no go. Hell, I'm now wondering why if the account is so great, then why don't they offer it to other drivers with seniority within the company?
In regards to recruiters not liking drivers like me that actually ask them detailed questions and know how to see through BS, I couldn't care less. I'm not there to haul freight because I love the company. I'm there for a paycheck. They didn't hire me to lower the unemployment rate. They hired me to make money for the company. So yes, I will inquire about the pay. This is a business relationship. Don't like it? Keep hiring greennhorns fresh out of school that flip your trucks over. I'm there to work, not get screwed. -
Well done Driver. I was the same way with recruiters when I decided I wanted to switch gears and get into the line of work I'm in now. Clean record, solid work history and all the required qualifications. I was up front with them about what I was looking for. I actually broke out laughing at a Kenan Advantage Group manager who was interviewing me when he told me what the pay package was. I then then said thanks a lot for wasting my time and walked out of his office. Experienced, hard working drivers need to stand up for themselves now more so than ever

It would be sweet if all newbies knew about scams companies pull and declined the driving job., but unfortunately most newbies believe every sales pitch from recruiters, ads and their websites.

You are not a good fit for Werner bc you have a functioning brain and are much too informed than our usual brain dead steering wheel holders.

Werner was where i got my start as a driver and i can say you will NEVER get a dime from detention. Your time has no value.
