OK back story: I started with this small company hauling crude in west Texas. That went to pot so I transferred over to their gasses division and relocated to Houston.

There's two of us down here and we are both salary. There's enough work for one and a half trucks. It was gravy work with us switching responsibility to our one big customer. He would go in one day and me the next. He wanted the Saturday run so he could be off Sunday and Monday. I was off Saturday and Sunday. On our days when we didn't go into Mr. Big Customer we would do various other runs in the area or an occasional deep Texas run down around Brownsville (occasional over nighter). Well the other driver had a safety violation and gets banned from Mr. Big Customer. Now I'm stuck with the duties of Mr. Big Customer and on-call 6 days a week. The guy that got banned is stilled employed as they were hoping to get him re-instated. That went on for nearly 5 months and they finally re-applied to get him back in. Mr. Big Company said: "no way, not ever. He's banned for life from all of our facilities". Pretty much ended his hopes. However my company has not yet fired the guy and is just now hinting at looking to hire someone else. It's been over 5 months now and I'm still stuck working on-call every Saturday which means even if I don't have to work that Saturday I still have to be ready, willing and able to work. Meanwhile the other guy is doing about 35 hours/week and has every weekend off. I have to ask to have a Saturday off. I have asked and received about three Saturdays off since this whole thing started. Otherwise I pretty much have to work the remaining Saturdays. My dispatcher has now stated that nobody in the company is guaranteed days off. True to a certain point but nobody works 7 days a week. Even on the oilfield we worked a 5/2-5/3 schedule.

Now don't get me wrong. I AM NOT BEING OVERWORKED. I do about 55 hours a week compared to his 35. Here's my beef. It seems as though I'm being punished for his wrong doings. I mean if there's two trucks and one is not capable of doing ALL of his required duties they should hire someone capable of fulfilling those assigned duties. My dispatcher's opinion differs though. He says he could give the other guy 30 days off in a row if he wants. As long as I have the hours, he expects me to run what he tells me to run. I see his point to a certain extent but since we're both salary it's seems a gross injustice to an innocent party..i.e. ME! to have to carry the guy who was banned for a safety violation.

Anyway, I'm about at my wit's end here. I'm just wondering when enough is enough.

Not everyone will appreciate what you do for them. You have to figure out who's worth your kindness and who's just taking advantage.

Is the salary you're getting worth working 55 hours a week for? That's all you need to know. It don't matter if the next guys getting more or less or the same.

Yeah, I'm wondering. You say you're both salaried drivers. Are you both making the same even though you're working 20 more hours and have every Saturday hosed being on call? That would be a deal breaker for me. I hope you're making considerably more since it seems as though you're the only one able to keep Mr. Big happy and (I assume) the trucking company profitable.

The company, on the crude side, was very good to me. The gasses division.....I'm still trying to figure it out

It's coming to the point that it's not worth it. I can make similar and not have the disparity in work load.

I can only assume he's making more since he's been there for nearly five years. We all pretty much start out at the same point.

That's another thing. There are plenty of hazmat/tankers jobs in the Houston area. Problem is I'm from Dallas and since going over-seas in 2010; going OTR in 2011 to 2014; living in Midland and now houston for nearly two years it's been nearly six years since I lived in what I consider my home near Dallas. Maybe I'm homesick as well.

Is it worth going to a different co to make the same money and work more hours but have the weekends off? I understand how you feel because I am in a similar situation with being on call. Try to take a step back with emotions removed and realistically look at your situation...compensation, work load, quality of the people, etc. I had to do this to realize that what I have would not be easily replaced and is actually a good deal for me. With that said, if you continue to communicate your concerns to your employer and they continue to push you off then maybe it is time to start looking.

If its salary, and the #2 driver is kickin it on 35 hours a week.... well id say hes got the bird dog spot ripping off the company. Why ya got spoil the deal? :) seriously tho, i would tell the company they may want to hire someone to do a fair share before you walk, leaving them completely unable to service the mr big coustomer. I dont give two ####s if someone has a better deal than me, but if your deal mess's with my world? Im gonna mess with yours.

Ask for a substantial raise after applying for other work as a back up. If they don't give you a raise, then walk, don't give them much of a notice and go to the new job.
