Let's say I am eligible for WIOA, or able to fund my own schooling.

How does a company take on that driver who has their newly printed CDL? They won't throw you to the wolves will they? I'm not worried at all with equipment, I'm coming from heavy equipment background and *knock on wood* have been very safe for the better half of a decade, plan to keep it that way too.

no, when you start your first job, private school or company school, you will ride with a trainer for a set amount of time, cdl school will basically just be learning how to basically maneuver the vehicle, once you go with the trainer is when you really learn how to do the job.

also as far as finding you the best company to start with, what are all of your desires (reasonable!) for a company? people will be able to point you in the right direction a lot more than just looking stuff up on your own....home every weekend....automatic trucks...manual trucks....type of freight...where you would like to run... etc

one off the top of my head you should check out is CCC in the comcar family, I know they do a lot in florida

another one that I happen to be going to is averitt, they have a terminal in Miami, youll run the eastern half of usa minus NE

Just from reading, I think I'd like a manual truck due to the way it puts power down is what I took from it.
Being home every weekend is nice, but it isn't necessary.

I will look into all of these options. There is a school in Punta Gorda that does CDL training, I talked to them a while back but I wasn't ready yet to make the commitment.

Thank you DC843 for your help.

WIOA if you can get it, then go with CTL Transportation.

I still recommend calling CTL Transportation and ask if they hire in your area. If so, you can start your career making good money right out of cdl school.
After graduating from cdl school CTL Transportation will send you to tanker school in Tampa.
You will need hazmat/tanker endorsements and TWIC ID Card. Google for nearest TWIC office to apply for the TWIC ID Card.
The CDL school may require an original birth certificate and original social security card that's not laminated.
With proper planning you won't get thrown to the wolves and will start your new career running with the big dogs from day one.
