Dry freight is not high dollar freight. Fuel mileage can make or break you. Being efficient is also important. Also you should not go into business with a lot of personal debt. More research should have been done before buying a truck.

I didn't have any personal debt at all when I went into business. In fact I had a rather large capital at the start, but with all of the expenses and the rates dropping, and I had a few breakdowns that were unexpected to be that expensive...my high pressure fuel pump went 6 months after I bought my truck and it cost me $11k plus down for a week to fix...Oh and my truck has been in the shop since Monday as I'm typing this and they don't know what's wrong with it!!! Sell that truck asap even for a loss and consider yourself lucky. Buy a 98-99 truck with 12.7 detroit and the only 11k you'll spend again will be for a whole engine inframe

First thing you should do is find a fuel card provider where you can pay 0.40 or so less than cash price. Fastest way to cut a bunch of money off your operating cost.

Don't confuse that Mercedes engine with a series 60 Detroit. Unless you live in Cali, it would be wise to go to at least a 2007 truck, but preferably a 2003 or older. You could also buy a new glider with a rebuilt pre-emission engine. For $10k I can do a complete inframe with new head, turbo, injectors, etc and I get 7mpg in a brick of a truck without trying.
