Curtain sides have a fixed roof, been around 30 years or more, rolling tarps slide out of the way and have no fixed top, been around a long time but have gotten very popular the last 10 years or so.

Curtain vans. We also use them for hauling chips like a van or a flat for lumber ect. No tarpie..

Yep.....easy tarping flatbed basically.....They are nice wagons,I pulled one a few times.
The Conestoga trailers are sweet! -
What about these? It looks like a soft side but I've never seen one open.
Curtain vans usually have buckles down the side. -
They use them a lot in Europe.
I've also seen curtain side trailers in Mexico. Grupo Modelo uses them to haul beer. They'll load a twin 45' trailer rig from the sides out in the yard. -
