So Cat is a maintenance free motor? Be nice to never open the hood except for an oil change, that would be a money saver for sure.

I woudn say maintenance free but much less wrench time than the old cummins. My grandfather was a die hard cummins man and my dad was a cat man. Guess who spent the most time in the shop back then. He didn't want to admit it but my grandfathers last two ford ltls came with 400 cats caus he was fed up of wrenching on the cummins while my dad didn't have to

And to this day my dad swears by his ford ltls. They had modified 380 cats in them. He still says to this day that no electronic cat motor that he owned pulls like they used to.

Wrenching on what, I'm still waiting for all these issues to come up with our 855s.

At least I know I can spend about a third on parts when it comes time to rebuild, and if you say the cats won't need rebuilding I say BS. The first B model was to have bearing changes at 250, only about 50K longer then the big cam.

Yes, I tore into it to check everything.... every time you buy something it has all been rebuilt, or it is a 400 or this or that, you know how that goes. The man was honest though come to find out, he said no more than 10,000 miles, and I would be surprised if it has that many. Dad and I were looking it over when I pulled number #6 slug out of it. Dad noticed the compression rings indicated they had not completely seated into the liners. All the bearings, mains / rods look new as well. One thing that surprised me was the look of the inside of the block, the crankshaft, connecting rods all looked as though it had just came out of a bead blaster it was so clean. when I pulled the water pump the inside of the engine in the coolant passages looked just as clean with no sign of rust or sludge. Always done my own wrenching since I was a teenager so the time spent here is just getting me back in the groove as a figure of speech. And it is truly a plus to have my Dad with 40+ years of experience on these things to give a helping hand. When he retired he pushed his toolbox into a corncrib to never be used again, but I see the "want to" when he stops by to visit lol. :)

Ok don't need a piss mach...

Why would a cats engine brake not really hold it back or is it just the way things are? On a b model. Went and looked at one 379 truck was alright but thought the price is a little high... truck had a 3406 turned up and a roadranger 18 sp and its tight.... I've drove some sloppy 13sp road rangers.

    Thanks

I did some research at the time and it seems to depend on the series of Jake it has on it. The 346 series which my truck had and some other have is just weak for some reason. The trucks that have the 349 series supposedly work much better. I would not have hesitated to drive mine bobtail on ice with the Jakes full blast lol. They literally had no stopping power.
