Stockton lost a driver, you're spending more time there, no more hotel. Probably hoping you'll get an apartment and wants to keep you there.

They made their move, now it's time for your counter move.
If you are happy with the situation, you can try to offer an alternative solution, such as finding a motel that will give you a good contract rate for weekends only. It shows the boss you are interested in finding a solution. Their response will tell you if they value you above a normal driver, or if they would rather hire a local driver without the additional overhead costs.
This is most likely coming from a bean counter above your boss, who doesn't see the value in a good, flexible, experienced driver. He probably told your boss he could keep you but only if he could get rid of the additional expenses you bring.
Long term, I think the writing is on the wall that you are going to go back to the Windy City. -
Oh come on guys, if they won't pay for lodging, then it is simple, go back to Chicago by flying there and find another job.
You OWE them nothing, NOT even the discussion about lodging. You are doing them a big favor and deserve more than that BS.
Leave the truck at the business, take uber to the airport and do yourself a favor, stop getting screwed.Canned Spam Thanks this. -
I tend to agree with Ridgeline on this...except that the op seems to be happy with his employer. If I were making decent money and happy other than the Stockton part, I would either wait for my return trip to Chicago or ask for/demand a return trip. If that didn't work, then I would consider flying myself home and quit. By no means whatsoever would I continue to do them a favor 2,000 miles from home for no added benefit.
I'm guessing that the local drivers in Stockton are paid more than local drivers in Chicago? If so, THAT is why they need you there so bad. -
Like many mentioned here, call your boss and tell him you want to get back to Chicago ASAP. He should get the picture right away if he is a smart business man. Then you will really see if your just a number or a reliable and dependable individual to his company.

But I don't think the owner is smart, demanding someone to stay put and then not pay them or at least pay for their lodging seems to weigh on the side of being really dumb and cheap. No matter if the driver is happy, he doesn't get that he is being crapped on and if we are to give the impression we are all slaves to this owner, this is where it starts.Canned Spam Thanks this.
