Who drives without a GPS or dash cam?

Google on the iPhone with an ocational look at the atlas to get the big picture, but only if it's an area I don't normally go to. Confirm the delivery address when I call the customer to let them know I'm coming.

No dash cam yet. Not sure if I ever will.

 

No dash cam (yet) thought only dummies used gps at first but love em now day's..used to be a good atlas and local directions also customer phone numbers...still don't rely solely on gps but get one you can set up trk specific I have a garmin dezl 560 lmt not to expensive and never let me down..even low bridges in Chicago..get a good ATLAS !! ..be careful out there driver...

 

I have about 10 state maps.

 

I picked up a PA truck route map at the I78 rest area coming from Jersey. Frkn thing is awesome. Shows every state highway that's staa approved. Shows all low bridges on those highways and shows route specific info.

Also where 102" over 28' 1/2" can't go. I have learned of highways I would have never though of taken. Turned out to be some great runs around eastern PA.

I don't get around Jersey rest areas often enough to see if they have similar maps, but I did Google and found one Jersey specific. Now I'm a two lane monster. Lol.

 

Am I the only one here who uses the stars and a compass!??

 

I do... When I go camping. The boss yelled at me the last time I used my sun dial to give him an ETA for delivery. It snowed that day.

 

I just saw a round ball compass stuck on the windshield of one of our trucks.
It looked so Old Skool and cool up there,

I have maps of every state,atlases for major cities,maps of every city and town in the north east and parts of Canada.every restarea I would pick up a map and it certain maps and atlases from truck stops.I have three boxes,a laundry basket and suitcase all full of maps and atlases.

 

I came off the road summers last year never had truck gps or camera. I didnt have gps because i had atlas and trusted it more. However I did use google maps. Didnt have a camera because mainly I couldnt afford one. Dont worry about affording gps right now. If you are starting out put money aside for a rainy day. Never know when weeks will be slow and you wont have much money to eat on. Trust me happened all the time. Sure enough Id get sent to a place Id never been with a truckstop that had a new restaraunt I wanted to try and couldnt cause I was broke. Biggest mistake I mad was spending way to much. Get the truckers atlas. Find city your going to. Quickest way to get there. Call customer for directions. Dont rely on map to tell you which exit. Call the customer and let them tell you. Map may say exit might be good but could be sharp turn or extreme grade oe may not be truck route. Couple places i went called customer and they told me take next exit after one map showed. That was because I had to back off the street and their directions put my in right direction to do that. If i had followed mad or gps would of went in the wrong way. Always call customer first. Even before I looked at atlas i called the customer. If no good numbers for them google it. Sometimes id spend an hour getting customers number. Dont follow blindy your companies directions.

 

I've made it through 11 months of OTR and regional work with Google Maps/Street View (and a paper map when those don't work) and some common sense/intuition.

I want a dash cam but haven't gotten around to getting one yet. And driving in Canada has less people looking for insurance fraud opportunities.
