Business Dilema

    You're looking to invest heavily to obtain an unknown piece of equipment for work you don't actually have.

    Not saying it can't be done: but I've thrown piles of money at equipment for jobs that petered out pretty ####### quick more than I'd care to admit.

    I'd be wanting a whole lot more possible load options (which a lighter truck will offer as far as. General freight) that pay well and are consistently available.

    Well that's it too. I have a truck that's spec'd for the oil field and not much else.

    With a lighter truck it would open up some options but for now this is what I have to work with.

    And you're right about the unknown equipment. Of course as I mentioned, I haven't had the new truck looked at by a mechanic yet. At this point it's all speculation.

    The question is 20k worth the risk when considering all the pros and cons?? That's the question that's plaguing me.

    I too am of the mindset that I know what I have and how it runs. But if it opens up the possibilities for me, shouldn't I consider, especially if it would get me out of a jam?

    My truck or the other, and even brand new ones will break down. Repairs are inevitable. Now if the new truck is mechanically sound, is it worth it all things considered?

    What about your truck spec is oilfield-specific? The truck in my avatar is specced to operate in the Marcellus/Utica, but it's a heavy built T800 with a full double frame, 525 ISX, 18spd, pto vacuum pump, 20K front and lift axles, and 46K rears. That's not to mention the Dragon 110bbl tank, and vacuum pump apparatus (it's a straight truck).

    I've never really seen the Lonestar as an oilfield truck...too close to the ground and too pretty IMO. What's different about yours?

    Why not look at heavy haul with your truck or logging.

    If a truck is making payments in this economy I think I would run it until it actually needed to be replaced

    Well quite honestly I don't think I'm tough enough to log in BC. Just being honest.

    And I know nothing about heavy haul. Only thing I know there, is that a few friends that I have doing it, are even worse for wear than I.

    Heavy haul up here, a lot of it is done as a company driver.

    Yup pretty much just a heavy tractor unit. 550 isx, 18spd, heavy front end, giant moose bumper, 4.5" T&E pump with a 60gpm hydraulic setup. Heavy steel frame and heavy steel cab/sleeper. I have plenty of clearance though. Taken it through some pretty mean ruts.

    I really don't think you'll be to heavy, not ideal but doable. My truck weighs in where yours does, and I don't have any trouble finding work pulling a flat.

    I think you have already made up your mind. For some reason your just talking to talk.
    I would pull the bumper guard off, the extra hydro tank off and run it.
    In no way would I take 20k hit like that.
    Just makes me wonder why your credit wasn't so good before you bought said truck, bad decisions? I don't know.

    In these market conditions I sure wouldn't be diving into an unnecessary extra $20,000 in debt on what looks like a gamble. If you had money to play it might be different. You'd be wasting $20,000 but the pressure of debt wouldn't be there.
