I passed my physical for my Dot Medical Certificate, but the Dr. only gave me a one year card.

I am 270lbs at 6'1", and he wanted me to lose some weight before he issued a two year card.

I'm not on any medication, and otherwise I'm perfectly healthy. And, yes, I'm currently trying to exercise and eat better to lose that weight.

My question is, will only having a one year card effect a companies decision to hire me?

There are a lot of guys in your position, given the new Fed Med regs. It shouldn't have too much of an affect on your hire ability.

You're fine. Go see a different doc next time...one that goes by the book instead of making $#!+ up as he goes. As long as you meet the requirements found in the regulations, he should issue a 2 year card. Period. There is nothing saying "drivers over a certain weight are only eligible for a 1 year certification".

If he's only certifying you for half the time the regulations allow, perhaps you should only pay him half of his fee? He can collect the other half when he certifies you for the 2nd year. Sounds fair to me!

I agree with PB, they pulled that baloney on me too. If nothing else, it brings you back in a year for another exam. It may be a problem as a company may wonder why you only got a 1 year card. Buncha crooks.

I had a doctor tell me that once i said well then I aint paying you and walked out across the street to a different doctor and they gave me a 2 year. I was 400 pounds at the time. The Law does not say you have to be skinny or even take the sleep apnea test(yet) Tell that doctor he need to read the regulations as he cant make stuff up.

Just wondering if maybe there was a sleep apnea connection. Some examiners are telling people to lose weight and only giving one year cards. It happened to a guy I know late last year.

like everyone says this will not affect your chances at all for future employment. Most the truckers have a one yr card. Most likely you'll have to retake physical anyway.Far as I know all the mega companies require a physical with their doctor.

Sounds phony. Are they charging you half the rate since it's only worth half the actual 2 year card?

Connection or not, they are operating outside the FMCSA guidelines. Are they going to start issuing 1 year cards to drivers that are below average height for an adult?.
