I'm with the local 104 . It's $45 per month but they pay $30 a month for cell phone allowance
$11 per week for good insurance, job security, pension/fully vested after 5 years, guaranteed 40 hrs, we get paid for everything we do , .. I have the book at home with all of the specific benefits but it's probably only specific to my job anyway . What exactly do you want to know that's not covered on the website ?Dominick253 Thanks this. -
Yes. There is a retirement fund but i don't know the details.
i think our union dues are $44 a month, but would need to double check. -
Just curious, really. I hear a lot of people grumbling about the falling wages in the trucking industry, it would seem like being involved in collective bargaining might go some way to help sort that out. Or not.
I have no idea, again, just mostly curious how many Teamsters are out there.Dominick253 and Canned Spam Thank this. -
You mean like all the great manufacturing jobs that are now in China? In another life, I worked in a union shop and did not see one benefit to me personally other than being held back on pay. Automatic advancement for having a pulse is not the way to advance workers. I also noticed that there was no incentive to better yourself other than mediocre status. I witnessed a lot of people with no drive or ambition. They would not crack open a book to figure out a problem or educate themselves unless they were getting paid. They will not lend a hand to someone with another job title.
I'm just not wired that way. The mentality has not changed since the first union came to being. They were needed and were great in the beginning but now they are slowly severing their own throats.
They are not for me. I have seen too many slime puddles keeping their jobs because they twitched once in awhile.truckdad, flightwatch, 1johnb and 15 others Thank this. -
I'm a teamster. This is my 1st Union gig. There's more good than bad to it. Honestly, there's nothing bad I can really say about it. I was never a pro Union person, so I guess I've changed my mind on unions. That being said, I don't think I'd take, or leave, a job based on whether it was Union or not in the future.
Dominick253 and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
one of the best benefits is being able to say no to driving unsafe equipment or refusing a load for hours of service reasons with out the fear of losing your job or losing money by having work not given to you. most contracts and rules are written to a certain shop.
one of the biggest BS lines out there is that all they want is your money. well they need to be paid and it cost money to protect workers rights, but when you break it down the better wages and benefits will more then pay for the union dues.
the .22 cents per hour in dues I pay (avg 50 hrs per week) is more then made up for by the 2.00 per hour more then the non union shops where I work at make, then add in the other benefits lower medical co-pay, better insurance, more paid time off, layoff and recall rights, etc..etc.....Chewbongka, Sho Nuff, Dominick253 and 1 other person Thank this. -
That's the thing, I can say no now and I am not afraid of losing a job.
1johnb, Ruthless and americanmadetrucker Thank this. -
I am not afraid of losing my job either, what I do not want to do is have to start over on a retirement account have to start at the bottom of the routes, have to switch insurance, lose vacation time, why should I have to risk losing that because the company wants me to do something illegal. if the union is not for you great as for myself I feel there are a lot of benefits to being in the union, then not being in one.
Sho Nuff, Dominick253 and White_Knuckle_Newbie Thank this. -
I'm a former union member, belonged to 3 over the years. If it works for you, great! But it didn't work for me.
