Guy I went to tradeschool with was assigned to mount and dismount tires one day as his practical assignment. Instructor said "make sure you use the tire cage." Half hour later, there's buddy airing up the tire. Tire's leaning up against the bench and he's just chilling out inside the cage.

    I had one of these.
Mine was a 1974 with a small cam cummins 350.
Mine had a set back front axel with no power steering.
It was a bit of a bear to back in with though.

Hi TM, split rims were the standard of the industry for probably 75 years. Fact is, I didn't drive a semi with tubeless tires until well into the 80's. The problem is, there's a ring that holds the tire and tube ( and inner flap) on the rim and if that ring isn't in the groove of the rim to hold it, when airing it up, it can blow the ring off, which is why you NEVER air up a split rim without it being in a cage or a chain around the whole works. Once it's together, in all my years with them, I've never had one come apart on the road, they are pretty durable ( aside from the tube part) I had one let go in a rail yard in Chicago once. This guy was changing a tire for me, had it laying on the ground, he clipped on the air hose and walked away. The tire he put on looked like junk, so I started to walk over by it, and it let go. About 3 seconds later, I heard the ring hit the ground, so it must have flew up in the air pretty far ( it was dark out) Good luck trying to find anyone that will change them now and for me, it was one of the best things when everything went to tubeless. ( although, I STILL see some rail chassis' with them):biggrin_25513:

Ditto that ST, when new they went together pretty good... Over time, with rust and corrosion, on top of having to beat them apart, things got distorted and when airing them up, one "hoped" that the ring was going to expand fully in the groove, reminds me of the old saying "In the groove man, in the groove" LOL....Like you also said, most, if not all shops won't even touch them anymore....The last one I had done was on an old large farm #### spreader, the guys did it, but under protest.....I thought that was gonna cost me a couple cases of beer extra, but they did it nonetheless....

Although my dad's '64 had them when we got it in '82, my uncle's '70 White Freightliner came with 11.22.5s from the factory. I didn't know you could still order one with tube type in the mid '70s.

If you are trying to upload it from Facebook that's why it won't work. You need to save the picture to your device and upload it from there.
