One example:
If you bought a new truck, paid it off-and then got T-boned and the truck was "totaled" and the insurance company wrote you a check for 50% of what you paid for it bc it's now 5 years old- it would be much more palatable to pull what good driveline components you could from your now totaled unit and put them into a new glider chassis @ a much lower cost and without FET than it would to buy another brand new truck complete.
Waste not want not.
You sound as if you don't have much experience running or owning trucks from a variety of different time periods and therefore only see "smog producers" or "clean diesels" neither of which is mutually exclusive from "clean running and mechanically reliable" and "prohibitively expensive" or "better for te environment"
If the "why" doesn't suit your need but does suit someone else's-best not to play with their livelihood in an attempt to promote your own agenda.
That's why gliders are an option but not a requirement: same as buying a brand new unit complete.

You are so right with the slobbering and leaking, after idling all night at a truck stop, in the morning I had to use a row boat to get from the truck to the building lol. I changed my post to used.DougA Thanks this.

I'd imagine its the same reason why i cant put a 1977 rebuilt 460ci in my 2008 f350. It'd be easiar to work on with out emissions, and computers but it would put the standards all over the place in the public. Its the new world we will force to be faced.
