The following fuel additives are NOT allowed:
- Used Lubricating Oil - Detroit specifically prohibits the use of drained lubricating oil in diesel fuel. Used lubricating oil contains combustion acids and particulate materials, which erode injector components, resulting in loss of power and increased exhaust emissions. In addition, the use of drained lubricating oil will increase maintenance requirements due to filter plugging and combustion deposits.
- Gasoline - The addition of gasoline to diesel fuel will create a serious fire hazard. The presence of gasoline in diesel fuel will reduce the fuel cetane number and increase combustion temperatures.
- Ethanol - The addition of ethanol to diesel fuel will create a serious fire hazard. The presence of ethanol in diesel fuel will reduce the fuel cetane number and increase combustion temperatures. Drain and clean tanks that contain such mixtures as soon as possible.
lubricating oil, gasoline, or ethanol in diesel fuel.
Detroit will not be responsible for any detrimental effects which it determines resulted from the use.fargonaz Thanks this. -
I guess that answer that

Says on my Howes bottle it is approved for use and is DPF safe.

When I drove at a LTL carrier that had orange trucks, they always filtered the drain oil and put it back into the fuel tanks. When the series 60 Detroit came into the fleet, no more putting waste oil in fuel tanks. Detroit would not warranty the engines burning waste oil.
-
I never heard of that. But makes sense since diesel basically a lubricant. But i wonder how much waste oil you can add before it misfires and Gunks up.

Mhyn, question is... How much additive, how often, and what kind. Can fuel pumps be inspected before catastrophic failures?
-
a.i don't know which additive is the right one for this situation. I have tried motorkote-low sulfur and I can say engine was running better, less noise was coming from fuel pump. now I want to try Stanadyne lubrication formula. my friend has 08 dd15 (900k miles) and uses that additive every day. he still has original pump and injectors. the truck runs between Reno, nv and Seattle, wa. i will try it and I will update my results.
b. first signs of failure-metall(iron) shavings in fuel tank and in filter housing/on filter media. no way to inspect fuel pump without removing it from engine.bossboy2 Thanks this. -
Thanks great info like always!mhyn Thanks this.

It's very common for the high psi fuel pump to fail. We do plenty of those at my dealer and I have done plenty myself. There is a update on them which had internal parts replaced. Usually a fuel knocking sound is audible before it fails.. almost sounds like its pulling in air from where in the system and that's the internal parts pretty much eating itself away. When you remove the pre filter and davco filter you will find metal shavings in the system. If you remove the high psi flange you will find metal shavings inside the pump and it's easy to detect with a magnet and obvious that its the fuel pump because the fuel tanks would throw in aluminum and you can't pick that up with a magnet. If you remove the PLV from the fuel rail and find metal shavings you're pretty much screwed and hope that you have warranty because all these parts will need to be replaced: 6 injectors, fuel rail needs to be cleaned, new high psi fuel lines, high psi fuel pump, high psi flange with a new seal, fuel module, davco filter, and the fuel tanks need to be removed regardless and sent out for cleaning.
