Thanks. And have a lot of questions. All this time working here and i've NEVER done a linehaul run. So i'm really in the dark here (no pun intended).

    1) The term "nightliner" was thrown around when i was in orientation---at a very large terminal (and i think you know which one.....). What exactly does this mean? You go to the same terminal(s) and come back to your home terminal everynight?

    a) If you're not a nightliner, then how does this work?

i'm looking for the LONGEST possible solo runs. Will re-locate if necessary and not necessarily particular on where although would prefer AZ, Northern or southern CA.

    2) Tell us more about teams. (might even consider this if the money is right)

Nightliner, you leave home terminal and work the dock at your destination (usually strip what you brought, by the time your done your two will be loaded and you head home)

Other runs consist of running to your pre determined terminal drop what you brought and return with stuff for your terminal or or stuff running through your terminal.

Team runs are becoming a thing of the past as they are cutting them left and right so they can throw them on the rails or contract them out (although its against the contract). The money is good on team runs but you do at times get run all over the country. My last team run was a three day turn, out wed. morning back by friday afternoon, grossed right around 1200.

Each have their pluses and minuses

We tried the rail thing once. It didn't work so well.

One of a carrier's selling points is their transit times. Rail yards on the other hand, operate on their own schedule.

We had entirely too many complaints about freight missing service when we were putting long haul freight on trains.

And there lies the problem, they may be saving a few bucks on the front end but once customers get fed up and stop using us......

Do you guys have a slow freight, cheaper rate option? That would work with rail. Otherwise, yeah, they'll get fed up when their transit times don't match the map on the website.

The whole rate thing is intriguing; A few weeks ago picked up one skid---GOING ABOUT 5 MILES AWAY $240 something dollars (long story will explain more on that later in the mean time the jist of the story is gov't overspending........).

Today picked up 4 pallets, total weight over 10,000 lbs. going about 120 miles away---$348!

Density plays a big part of that. That's why you see notations like "class 50" or "class 200" on a BOL. The lower the number, the more dense the commodity.

Freight in higher classes takes up more space on the truck, thus a higher cost to transport it because you load as many other shipments with it.

Do your delivery receipts have rate info on them? I never get to see what the bill was.
