I wouldn't worry bout the auto trannys, because most fleets are moving to them, if they haven't already. You can always rent a truck from a small driving school with an instructor to learn to shift. After 14 years out of trucking, I did that as a refrsher, before taking any road tests. I think it cost me around $200 for 3 hours.
Don't worry about cameras either, because it will likely be mandated by Congress in the near future, as well as governed trucks ( I can't wait for that).
I never worked for Averitt, but domiciled in Charlotte for 2 years and ran their network freight exclusively for the same period. Their seem to treat their drivers well for a company with 6300 trucks Their health insurance is very reasonable and overall benefits good, not the best paying job, but about average.
Others may dis them because they are large or they had a bad experience with them. I am in the middle of a job search and they are fairly high on my list right now. A big reason for that is their company culture. With some experience you could do better, but you could do a LOT WORSE. I know a number of drivers that have been there 20 years or more.
Good Luck.Redtwin Thanks this. -
Yea they are a starter company but to be honest if I could clear 800 a week and be home every week I'd probably retire there.

I don't think Averitt is a starter company but they do hire recent CDL grads. Many guys there have been there for a long time 20+ years. Now granted I was a new driver to the industry, and was only there for a month and quit. I quit the industry all together to choose a new career. I have nothing negative to say about Averitt they were good, and seemed like a company that actually cared. I was home every weekend (Sat afternoon until Monday AM), and if I ever wanted to go back to the trucking industry I would love to go back to Averitt, if they would take me back. You have to realize if your going to be home 99% of the weekends you can not expect to make $2500 per week. Trucks were newer, all autos, APUs, no complaints on them. Now my trainer was kind of a butt but that was just his personality.
