As I posted a year ago I have been using a Predator 10K with the 27 inch shaft with good results, well yesterday I was at Petri in Kenly NC and bought a 5.5 foot Francis just to try something different. SWR readings were 1.7 on 40 and 1.5 on 1 and 20. After driving today to Kearney NJ I was really satisfied with the performance. The receive seemed on par with the Predator but less static was present. Skip was crazy all day (still is at 6:35 pm) and unfortunately I was able to hear it all, it gets old sometimes when you are trying to get traffic reports around DC and Baltimore. But for anyone not wanting to spend $80.00 to $ 100.00 on a fancy brand name coil IMO the Francis, and I'm sure the other fiberglass equivalents work just as well.

The 7 foot Firestick is a trim to tune model. I went back to a 5 ft Firestick II, after breaking the 7 footer off at the top of the threads. The icing was brutal last winter. The shorter Francis worked fine, too. Used one of those until I got the Firestick II.
Q5 started recommending a Browning instead of a Firestick. Looks like a trimmer open coil loaded whip. -
I bought the SkipShooter and it has a tunable tip, looks like a nail. I only had to move it about a 1/2 inch. I've not used the FireStick but you can tune it by cutting a little wire off of it and trimming the shaft I would think. I've trimmed a lot of fiberglass antennas that way. You can even tune a Francis. I know a guy that always tuned his Francis antennas. 1.5:1 wasn't good enough for him. He wanted as close to flat as he could get it. You can't argue with him on that, he always had the bet best sounding and furthest reaching radio on his run. (mail hauler).darthanubis, rabbiporkchop and Ozgur Thank this.

I have a backup 5.5 Francis that I tuned.
mike5511 Thanks this. -
Im sure he would sound just as good at 1.5, i would only worry about any reading higher than that if I was running some serious power, maybe he was.
darthanubis Thanks this. -
Yes he was, Boomer 400, then a KL 500. You could here him for miles when he hit a hill top and he sounded just as good at 20ft as he did at 20 miles.darthanubis and rabbiporkchop Thank this.

Im Using a Browning on my 2016 Cascadia seems to work well with my Stryker SR-955HP was in Quartzite,AZ and talked to IL on 38 LSB
i bought a shaft extension from the cb shop at the Petro in Atlanta made a huge difference -
Hope he didnt run that power into a francis they are only rated at 150 watts
darthanubis and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
He did. And I've done it as well as have hundreds of freight haulers. A 5x5 on a vise grip mount and a big ol kicker in your slip seat box. Hear those boys for miles!
darthanubis and rabbiporkchop Thank this.
