I guess the trucking companies have to do something to satisfy the insurance companies. But personally I felt the time I spent watching the videos was a waste of time. Aside from some catchy phrases I was doing it anyway. Defensive driving mandates you learn these principals. Anyway that's how I feel about the smith system.
If I had a new trainee in the truck on a 10 speed I'd ask, "Which gear is the most difficult to shift?"
They'd usually pick the shift from 5th to 6th, or something like that.
Then I'd say, "The most difficult gear is the 11th gear."
That usually got a puzzled look.
By the "11th gear" I meant the mental gear. Like when you've been running the speed limit on the interstate and approach a city, traffic slows to less than the speed limit. You have to shift mental gears to now start concentrating on space management.
Or approaching an on ramp, with traffic in the hammer lane pinning you, you have to slow as necessary to give plenty of space for folks to merge.
