I'm not a trucker, just a guy trying to save an old Peterbilt from the scrap yard. I bought a '74 Pete with just under 62K miles (water tanker) to build a rat rod diesel out of. It has a NTO 262 Cummins with a 5 spd and 3 spd tranny and I won't have that much real estate when the mods are done. First choice would be to run an Allison MT643 that I have if there is an adapter to bolt it up. The truck will run the highways, parades, car shows, and probably never pull a trailer (pintle hitch only). Suggestions???

Oh, and OP, I got nothing useful, but good on you for trying to keep one of the old dogs in the race!

I can't help you with your tranny question, but I hope that you'll post pictures of your build.

Make it a straight 5 spd??

Are you sure about the year? I thought they stopped putting 262s in the mid 60s.

I'm with Oscar on this one. We need pics.

Go GI Joe salvage. Some 6x6's had small cams with 5 speed auto's. A friend of mine bought some trucks with very low mileage. Then we need pic's.
