Why do people needlessly idle ?

50 kilometers? what is that 27 miles? Sorry but kind of a ridiculous statement, why not just say your an old school trucker that has always idled his truck 24 /7 you don't have a good reason why but you can't stop. Some of the reasons are beyond stupid if your argument is you need to run a 500 hp diesel engine all night to power your refrigerator or use your heater then you are a fool , and most the reasons I'm hearing are no better just turn the dam thing off try it who knows you might like it.

 

Perhaps the title should have been "Why Do People Idle?"

Throwing in the word "needlessly" implies a certain amount of pre concluded judgment.

At first I was miffed by so many replies to mind your own business. But then I went back and re-read the title.

I could see a person honestly wanting to know why some drivers "legitimately" idle their trucks. Especially if that driver started driving with a company that had very strict rules against idling.

Here's another good reason to idle when I'm not in the truck. I go in the truck stop to shower and eat dinner. When I get back to the truck I want it to be a comfortable temperature and have the batteries fully charged before I finally hit the bunk and turn the engine off. Then I can wind down reading a book on my phone, check my newsfeed, etc and not have to worry about low voltage before falling asleep.

 

Such naivety and truck envy. The reason that you do not see more of the grass burning, exhaust sucking steering wheel holders with their trucks idling is that the truck shuts off by itself.

Why in the #### does this irritate you two? If you can't sleep near a running truck you are in the wrong profession.

You know what is worse than foreign immigrants coming across the border and wanting to change the laws in our country? Californians moving to another state doing the same thing and whining truckers.

 

I idle because I can I pay for the fuel. I find that most drivers who ##### about other trucks idiling are the ones who work for companies that restrict their idiling.

 

You want to walk back to where you get cell service? Is some places it can be much further than your 27 mile trek into the woods.

 

I always flound the idling of my trk and others including the reefer unit soothing when sleeping.

 

so when does the oil level get checked?

let me guess, the fuel island,

is it long enough to let the oil settle?

 

Never thought I'd see the day when truckers complain about other trucks running. So many folks think they need to control what other people do. Run your truck, and let others run theirs.

Personally, I sleep better with a truck running near mine, even if I have mine shut off. A constant noise drowns out the sporadic traffic sounds from the big road, and whatever else is around.

I'll idle if it's too cold or too hot. I buy my own fuel, and it doesn't bother me a bit to idle for a good night's sleep. It was 27 degrees here on location in western Oklahoma last night, and I idled all night, right next to 3 other trucks that also idled all night. Still idling as I type this, waiting to unload, and no one here is complaining about it.

I'm with @cnsper on this one. I can't figure out why anyone wants to get into trucking if they can't stand to hear a truck running.

I actually miss the days when I was a young'un, driving by the truck stop, and all trucks were idling, chicken lights on, lookin' like a light show. To me, that's part of truckin'.

 

Needlessly idiling is rediculous because an engine only has a particular amount of turns of the crank shaft from the time it is new till the time it is worn out.
Do you what to use those crankshaft turns going down the road making miles that you are paid for?
Or do you want the crankshaft turns wasted idiling for no money?
Then when you add in the amount of fuel expended for no return on the dollar spent it's really a no brainer.
Also an in frame can run 18,000.00 or more verses a starter
which is 400.00 (and I don't idile and I have 850,000 miles on my starter so far)
Hmm what to do????

 

Right? I can go 27 miles from my house and be in the middle of nowhere in the desert with little to no cell service.

And that 27 miles into the bush up in Canada may be on top of a hundred or so miles into a desolate area on paved roads.
